1. You are intending to recover data from Acronis Nonstop Backup. See Acronis Nonstop Backup in Acronis True Image Home 2010;

3. After selecting a specific date, Time Explorer starts scrolling all time stamps on the time line. This automatic scrolling may take up to two minutes.

Introduction

The initial backup speed might be slower than expected when using Acronis Online Backup for the first time.

Description

Yes, the initial backup takes a long time. Online services depend on the Internet Service Provider (ISP) for performance and are independent of the actual software. No one vendor controls the overall Internet and Internet performance is a factor with online services, unfortunately.

Most Customers should expect to back up 2-5 GB/day. Some users will have higher performance if they have higher bandwidth connections; others will be slower.

The good news is that, after the initial backup, only the new and changed files get backed up over the Internet each time. The amount of data will be much less and so will the time for each backup.

What you can do:

One idea would be to select only your most critical files for the initial backup. When that is complete, then add more files and folders for the 2nd backup. And use this approach until all of your data is protected online.

Another idea would be to launch your initial backup over a weekend or a time when you know you will not be using your PC for a couple days.

More information

You can also set your CPU allocation to “high” in the options tab to improve system performance of the backup service. After the initial backup is completed, Acronis recommends moving the setting back to “low” so it does not impact the performance of your other applications.

Deploy Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi to each host instead of deploying one to the cluster

Description

Backup of all virtual machines of a cluster with a single Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi (Virtual Appliance) may take a significant amount of time. If length of the backup window is important, use the following workaround:

1. Deploy the Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi to each clustered host instead of deploying a single agent to the cluster. You can do so from the Acronis Management Server. Just right-click the Virtual machines item instead of the vCenter group; See also Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Deploying Agent for ESX/ESXi;
2. If VMware DRS is enabled in the cluster, disable automatic migration of the Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliances. You also should not migrate them manually to different hosts to avoid the situation when an Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi manages a host other than its own. The backup and recovery performance will considerably degrade in that case;
3. Create a dynamic group of virtual machines hosted on the clustered hosts. Use the Host/VA criterion for the group;
4. Create a backup policy and apply the policy to the dynamic group. Once a virtual machine migrates to a different host, the Acronis Management Server will deploy a backup task for this machine to the Acronis Agent that manages that host.

Such configuration enables simultaneous backup of virtual machines hosted on different hosts to reduce the backup speed.

(!) This approach has the following limitations:

• It is not recommended to use the Back up now scheme because a machine backup will start every time the machine moves to a different host. Use the Back up later scheme to create a backup plan or policy with manual start;
• Every time a machine moves to a different host, the Acronis Management Server logs show errors similar to the following:

  Cannot revoke the policy because it was not deployed to the machine
  Failed to process the synchronization data received from Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Management Server
  Managed entity '564DF96E-F3A5-0360-336F-EA6CA0F3399C' cannot be found

Positiv ist, dass nach dem ersten Backup nur noch neue und geänderte Dateien über das Internet gesichert werden. Die Datenmenge ist wesentlich geringer. Somit nehmen auch die einzelnen Backups wesentlich weniger Zeit in Anspruch.

Was Sie tun können:

Sie können beispielsweise nur die wichtigsten Dateien für das erste Backup auswählen. Wenn dieser Teil abgeschlossen ist, fügen Sie mehr Dateien und Ordner für das 2. Backup hinzu. Gehen Sie auf diese Weise vor, bis alle Daten online geschützt sind.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit ist, das erste Backup über das Wochenende oder zu einem Zeitpunkt auszuführen, wenn Sie den PC einige Tage nicht verwenden würden.

Symptoms

1. You set up backup staging by selecting multiple backup locations via retention rules:

2. When setting the backup options, the HDD writing speed or Network connection speed options may not be displayed.

Cause

This is a know limitation with staging.

Backup options are displayed only for the first location.

For example, if you select a local folder as the first backup location, you will be able to set HDD writing speed in the backup options.

If you select a network share as the first backup location, you will be able to set Network connection speed in the backup options.

Solution

As a workaround, you can set the necessary settings in default backup settings: Options -> Default backup and recovery options -> Default backup options.

This is a graphic user interface issue

Symptoms

1. You create a disk/partition backup;
2. You restore a partition from backup;
3. After recovery, the restored partition is not seen in What to backup and cannot be selected for backup. Also, the partition may show as Unallocated space in Disk Recovery.
4. In recovery log, you see messages similar to the following one:

   Disk '\local\hd_sign(016EB0D2)' has invalid BIOS number (0). The following value will be used: '128'

Cause

Issue in the product.

Solution

Restart Acronis True Image Home 2012. The restored partition will reappear in Backup and Recovery wizards.

This article describes how to deal with the situations when the Virtual Appliance backup/replication performance is low

This article applies to:

• Acronis vmProtect

Symptoms

The backup/replication is performed using NBD (network) mode due to missing vSphere Hot-add feature - this is a limitation of the vSphere licensing - see Acronis vmProtect 7: Supported Environments. The backup/replication speed however is much lower than expected (for example 5 MB/s instead of 20-30 MB/s) taking into account the available bandwidth of the network interfaces.

Cause

The most probable cause is that Acronis vmProtect Virtual Appliance is using "flexible" network card type by default and in some cases this may cause low performance.

Solution

The solution is to change the network card from "flexible" to "VMXNET 3" type in the settings of the Virtual Appliance:

1. Turn off the Virtual Appliance and upgrade virtual hardware:

2. In the settings of the Virtual Appliance go to the Options tab, change the Operating System to Other 2.6.x Linux (32 bit) and apply the changes by clicking OK button:

   (!) Applying the changes is important, since otherwise it will not be possible to follow the instructions from the next steps.

3. Remove the network card from the Hardware tab and add a new network adapter of "VMXNET 3" type:

4. Apply the changes and power on the Virtual Appliance. The network configuration will remain intact and will be applied to the newly added network card (i.e. the network settings will not be lost).

More information

Besides the above solution, there is a workaround to use Acronis vmProtect Windows Agent instead of Virtual Appliance, since in this case there will be native Windows OS network drivers used and thus there will be no issues with the network performance.

In the future versions of Acronis vmProtect the Virtual Appliance virtual hardware version will be increased up to 7 (supported by ESX(i) 4.0+) and the network adapter type will be "VMXNET 3" by default, so this issue will no longer be actual.

Symptoms

1. You set up backup staging by selecting multiple backup locations via retention rules:

2. When setting the backup options, the HDD writing speed or Network connection speed options may not be displayed.

Cause

This is a know limitation with staging.

Backup options are displayed only for the first location.

For example, if you select a local folder as the first backup location, you will be able to set HDD writing speed in the backup options.

If you select a network share as the first backup location, you will be able to set Network connection speed in the backup options.

Solution

As a workaround, you can set the necessary settings in default backup settings: Options -> Default backup and recovery options -> Default backup options.

It is being considered to make GUI more flexible and show all possible speed limiting options in one of the future product updates.

This is a graphic user interface issue

Symptoms

1. You create a disk/partition backup;
2. You restore a partition from backup;
3. After recovery, the restored partition is not seen in What to backup and cannot be selected for backup. Also, the partition may show as Unallocated space in Disk Recovery.
4. In recovery log, you see messages similar to the following one:

   Disk '\local\hd_sign(016EB0D2)' has invalid BIOS number (0). The following value will be used: '128'

Cause

Issue in the product.

Solution

Restart Acronis True Image Home 2012. The restored partition will reappear in Backup and Recovery wizards.

This article describes how to deal with the situations when the Virtual Appliance backup/replication performance is low

This article applies to:

• Acronis vmProtect

Symptoms

The backup/replication is performed using NBD (network) mode due to missing vSphere Hot-add feature - this is a limitation of the vSphere licensing - see Acronis vmProtect 7: Supported Environments. The backup/replication speed however is much lower than expected (for example 5 MB/s instead of 20-30 MB/s) taking into account the available bandwidth of the network interfaces.

Cause

The most probable cause is that Acronis vmProtect Virtual Appliance is using "flexible" network card type by default and in some cases this may cause low performance.

Solution

The solution is to change the network card from "flexible" to "VMXNET 3" type in the settings of the Virtual Appliance:

1. Turn off the Virtual Appliance and upgrade virtual hardware:

2. In the settings of the Virtual Appliance go to the Options tab, change the Operating System to Other 2.6.x Linux (32 bit) and apply the changes by clicking OK button:

   (!) Applying the changes is important, since otherwise it will not be possible to follow the instructions from the next steps.

3. Remove the network card from the Hardware tab and add a new network adapter of "VMXNET 3" type:

4. Apply the changes and power on the Virtual Appliance. The network configuration will remain intact and will be applied to the newly added network card (i.e. the network settings will not be lost).

More information

Besides the above solution, there is a workaround to use Acronis vmProtect Windows Agent instead of Virtual Appliance, since in this case there will be native Windows OS network drivers used and thus there will be no issues with the network performance.

In the future versions of Acronis vmProtect the Virtual Appliance virtual hardware version will be increased up to 7 (supported by ESX(i) 4.0+) and the network adapter type will be "VMXNET 3" by default, so this issue will no longer be actual.

Symptoms

1. In Acronis Backup & Recovery 10, you set the Network connection speed option in the default or plan options;
2. You run a backup;
3. Network connection bandwidth is fully utilized during backup and does not conform to the values you allocated in the options.
